Board games

Board games are tabletop games played with small pieces that are placed and moved on a specially designed patterned board, sometimes alongside components like dice, and they have been played, travelled and evolved across most cultures and societies throughout history. Today's hobby has grown well beyond the classics: the late 1990s saw companies producing more new games for a growing worldwide market, with The Settlers of Catan (1995) often credited with popularising German-style board games outside Europe and the early 21st century described as a "Board Game Renaissance" that shifted attention away from 20th-century standbys like Monopoly and Game of Life.
